How to choose a recovery meeting
There is more than one kind of meeting, and the right one is the one you will keep going to. Try a few.
Kinds of meetings
- 12-step fellowships, such as Alcoholics Anonymous (AA), Narcotics Anonymous (NA) and Cocaine Anonymous (CA), work through the twelve steps together.
- SMART Recovery teaches skills for managing urges and change.
- Recovery Dharma uses meditation and Buddhist-inspired practices.
- Al-Anon and Nar-Anon are for family and friends.
Finding your fit
Go to a few different meetings before you decide. Size, tone and topic vary a lot from room to room. Online meetings by Zoom can help with scheduling and with finding a topic that is hard to find near you.
A sponsor or mentor is a personal choice. At AMIAM residents choose the meetings that work for them, and any of them counts toward the weekly requirement. See the house rules and the FAQ.
